As a child, Ashley was extremely active. She enjoyed playing outside with her friends and keeping busy. Early on in her teenage years she noticed a decline in her cardio levels. Simple chores, such as; vacuuming, lifting groceries and washing the dishes were becoming increasingly difficult to do. Even washing her hair would tire her out quickly.
Ashley knew something wasn’t right with her and decided to seek medical attention. It took approximately a year of numerous visits to specialists before she was officially diagnosed with FSH, Facioscapulohumeral, a form of Muscular Dystrophy. It was a surreal moment in her life, knowing that her body would gradually become weaker and could ultimately end up in a wheel chair. Ashley allowed the disease to consume her every thought and ultimately, let it define her.
Ashley’s mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2014. She watched her mother courageously battle her disease. Every day she woke up with a smile on her face and the desire and will to fight for her health, for her happiness and for another day to spend with her family. Her mother’s positive attitude motivated Ashley to make a change in her life as well.
Ashley joined a gym and focused on weight lifting. The workout was mainly centered around a leg workout as her legs weren’t yet affected by her disease. She felt strong and empowered, free from all of the stigmas. Ashley then moved on to Sami’s BBY challenge. She needed to prove to herself and everyone around her that she can do anything she sets her mind to regardless of her muscular dystrophy. It was a physical and mental challenge but she was triumphant! She changed her frame of mind and way of thinking and adopted a can do attitude!
